Book Review | Dead-End Detective by Amanda Flower – A Piper and Porter Mystery

Date Published | August 25, 2020

Date Read | June 2021

Goodreads Rating | 1

Overall | Huge disappointment – I just didn’t like this story, the characters or anything about it. First of all, why would it be the 2 Girls Detective Agency if you’re going to kill the main girl right away and replace her with some shady, creepy nephew. And on top of that, her dead friend cuts her out of her will entirely and writes in her skeevy nephew. It seemed like being stabbed in the back by the business partner you thought was your bestie. However, as a biz owner, there is NO WAY this would’ve happened if Darby wasn’t an idiot. You can stipulate survivor rights in a business partnership. You aren’t supposed to be at the mercy of your partner’s will. This doesn’t happen in real life. And then despite working there for years, Darby seems pretty clueless and terrible at investigating. Just make this an amateur sleuth mystery. But it doesn’t matter. -right from the get-go, the whole double-crossing by her partner with the will just made you hate the murder victim. Who cares who murdered her? She’s a liar and a terrible person. Saying that you wanted your biz partner to watch out for your nephew as the reason you betrayed her in your will did NOT in any way give me the heartwarming feeling of someone caring for you beyond the grave. Plus, there is absolutely zero chemistry between the 2 of them. they alternate between ignoring each other, being rude to each other and then accusing each other of murder.

Description | Darby Piper is in shock. A seasoned female detective, she worked with Samantha Porter at the Two Girls Detective Agency. Now, Samantha is dead, and it doesn’t look like an accident. In fact, evidence is pointing toward Darby.

Darby had expected to inherit Samantha’s half of the agency, but Samantha had recently changed the will to leave it to Tate Porter, her nephew, who returns to town.

Tate is no private eye. He’s a world traveler and a veteran whose military past is also something of a mystery. But as he helps Darby delve into secret histories and real estate development plans, he proves to be a talented amateur sleuth. Will the agency have a future…even if Darby can solve this murder mystery in time?

This first in series cozy mystery includes a free Hallmark original recipe for Berry Trifle.
